Windwards Give Back - 2005
The November 2005 OCSC Flotilla to the Windward Islands in the Caribbean has designated Ocean Spirits as the recipient of our Give Back effort. Ocean Spirits (est. 1999) is a nonprofit group in Grenada that works to protect leatherback turtles through extensive monitoring efforts and a high degree of local community involvement. Sustainability is key to conservation and there are no better stewards of Grenada's turtles than the communities that have historically relied on them.
The findings of Ocean Spirit's research would indeed be practically worthless if public awareness isn't developed. Along such lines, the donations from each OCSC charter (total= $750) are being directed towards a PC projector, which will be used in Ocean Spirit's community education programmes. Their growing nationwide initiative has already reached 4,000 students.
