Scott Petritz

US Sailing Instructor and Fleet Service Crew

Why do you sail?

For a number of reasons. I love that you can learn something new every time that you go out whether you’re racing or cruising. I love the camaraderie that you experience with a race crew and being with friends on the water. I love the simplicity and beauty of sailing and sharing it with others.

What drew you to working at OCSC? Or what do you enjoy about working at OCSC?

Upon moving to the Bay Area in 2013 I was told that OCSC was a great school with an amazing staff.

What's your sailing background?

Started sailing dinghies at age 7 in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. Grew up racing on the family J29 as well as Lasers and 420s. Spent last 8 years living in Hawaii sailing almost everyday on Hobie Cats and a J33.

When you're not sailing, what can we find you doing?

Trying to spend as much time outside as possible. Surfing, backpacking, skiing, traveling, or watching sports.

What are your favorite sailing books of all time?

  • Sailing Smart - Buddy Melges
  • An American Sailing Story - Gary Jobson
  • Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea - Steven Callahan
