OCSC: Why do you sail?
SS: Because it is, challenging, relaxing, invigorating and fun all at the same time.
OCSC: What do you enjoy about working at OCSC?
SS: The people, both the staff and the students are the greatest. I love to share my sailing experiences and I still consider the San Francisco Bay Olympic Circle to be one of the greatest places in the world to sail.
OCSC: What's your sailing background?
SS: I began sailing when I was a student at Cal. Sailing with the Cal Sailing Club then associated with the universities athletic program. I went on to own and crew on many racing boats and to cruise my own boat from Canada to Mexico plus an extended trip through out the Caribbean.
OCSC: When you're not sailing, what can we find you doing?
SS: I have been a part-time instructor at OCSC since 1989. Now that I am retired from my non-sailing 'real job', I spend as much time as possible traveling and sailing.
OCSC: What are your top five sailing books of all time?
SS: American Practical Navigator, by Nathaniel Bowditch; The Ashley Book of Knots, by Clifford Ashley; The Proper Yacht, by Arthur Beiser; Heavy Weather Sailing, by Adlard Coles; The Riddle of the Sands, by Erskine Childers.
