Sailing in Tahiti offers balmy easterly trade winds averaging between 15 and 20 knots throughout the year. Encircling barrier reefs provide a habitat for wonderful marine life, colorful coral, and more than 500 species of fish, making it a world-class diving location. Come to our next planning party to learn more about joining us.

OCSC SAILING - Thailand Flotilla - Explore the Jewels of South East Asia - 01The French Polynesia

The French Polynesian archipelago of the Society Islands, the Marquesas, Tua Motu, Gambier and the Austral Ridge is situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Our cruising area in the Society Islands encompasses the islands of Raiatea, Bora Bora, Tahaa and Huahine, all just a four or five hour sail apart. This is relaxed cruising in a stunning natural paradise. Soak the sophisticated atmosphere along the way or get back to nature, cruising over beautiful lagoons and colorful reefs or gazing out over scenic vistas of jagged volcanic peaks.

Sailing in Tahiti

A Tahiti sailing itinerary typically includes easy passages within the protected waters behind the beautiful coral reefs that encircle the islands, allowing for relaxed sailing in one of the most exotic cruising grounds in the world. Snorkeling and scuba diving on the reefs, swimming and sunbathing on white-sand beaches, enjoying the delights of culture, shopping, and fine restaurants, plus spending quiet evenings aboard your yacht in picturesque anchorages are all part of what makes sailing in Tahitian waters so appealing.

Relatively short passages between the islands integrate open-ocean sailing. The longest passage to windward is about 18 nautical miles. The open-water passages downwind from Huahine to Tahaa and from Tahaa to Bora-Bora are simply spectacular, South Pacific sailing at its very best.

OCSC SAILING - Thailand Flotilla - Explore the Jewels of South East Asia - 02Favorable Winds And Permanent Sunshine

The climate in French Polynesia is sunny and pleasant. The dry season, which is the winter, is cooler (78 - 85°F or 25 - 29°C) and windier. It runs from May to September. These are probably the best months to come sailing as you can enjoy a prevailing easterly wind of 15 or 20 knots, increasing to 25 knots, and the sea becoming choppy with swells of 3-5 ft. Also, water temperature averages at 79°F (26°C) during this time.

Tides

Around 20 to 30 cm (approx.: 1 foot). In the Leeward Islands low tide is around 6.00 am and 6.00 pm, high tide around noon and midnight.

OCSC SAILING - Thailand Flotilla - Explore the Jewels of South East Asia - 03OCSC’s Flotillas

If you haven’t been on a flotilla before, here’s how it works. OCSC reserves multiple boats for the location and holds a series of planning parties to explain the details and answer questions from anyone who is interested. Some members choose to reserve a whole boat with their friends and family; some hook up with other singles or couples to form their own boat; a third option is to reserve a cabin on a boat skippered by an OCSC Instructor.

Flotilla charters are ideal for first-time skippers since OCSC helps in cruise planning, introduces individuals to others interested in sharing a yacht, and sends an experienced ‘group leader’ along. The security in this type of ‘buddy-boating’ is a primary reason for flotilla-style chartering, but the ease of participation and ‘instant parties’ make a first charter that much more enjoyable.
