Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand is endowed with unparalleled tropical beauty. Of its four distinct regions, the southern peninsular reaches of the country are of the most interest to sailors. The cruising grounds off the east coast of the island of Phuket are among the finest anywhere. Towering pinnacles of limestone jut from the emerald-colored and sheltered waters of Phang-nga Bay. To the south, the famous Phi Phi Islands stand as jewels of the Andaman Sea. More than 130 picturesque isles lie within the province of Krabi alone, and the offshore marine preserves of the Similan and Surin islands are internationally famous as one of the world’s top scuba diving sites.
A Phuket sailing vacation offers a multitude of scenic and secure anchorages, pristine white-sand beaches, rugged uninhabited islands, and lively nightlife and resorts. The warm, hospitable people of Thailand enhance the enjoyment of a Phuket yacht charter, making the sailing adventure all the more memorable in a nation often called the Land of Smiles.
Thailand is a year round sailing destination. There are two main seasons, which are called the wet and dry season, or the SW or NE monsoon, respectively. Seasonal winds tend to be predictable, although there may be inconsistencies as they change from one to the other.
The NE monsoon runs from November to April and has wind speeds of force 2 to 4 from the NE. The winds are quite stable during this period and temperatures are usually in the region of 30 deg C. It is consistently dry and sunny, with ideal conditions for sailing. If you wish to visit the Similan Islands you can only do so during the North East Monsoon and will be asked to sign a Moorings disclaimer before you leave the base.
Thailand has two high tides per day. The range varies from half a metre to just over 3 metres. The Ao Po marina has instant all tide access to Phang Nga bay. The latest that a Moorings yacht can depart from the marina is 5.00 pm as the nearest anchorage is half an hour away and all yachts must be anchored by 5.30 pm. The area and yacht briefings take up to an hour each and provisioning shopping will take around 3 hours including taxi transfers. Therefore if you wish to depart on the day their charter starts they should arrive no later than 12 noon if you are doing your own provisioning or 3.00 pm if you have provisioned online.
If you haven’t been on a flotilla before, here’s how it works. OCSC reserves several boats for the location and holds a series of planning parties to explain the details and answer questions from anyone who is interested. Some members choose to reserve a whole boat with their friends and family; some hook up with other singles or couples to form their own boat; a third option is to charter a cabin on a boat skippered by an OCSC Instructor. These planning meetings are the best way to decide which option works best for you. We suggest that you use them to meet potential shipmates, other skippers, and the OCSC personnel who will be leading the flotilla.
Flotilla charters are ideal for first-time skippers since OCSC helps in cruise planning, introduces individuals to others interested in sharing a yacht, and sends an experienced ‘group leader’ along. The security in this type of ‘buddy-boating’ is one reason for flotilla-style chartering, but the ease of participation, sailing with lots of friends made at the planning parties and multi-boat get-togethers in the evenings make any charter that much more enjoyable.
There are three ways to get involved. You can charter your own yacht, let us help you hook up with other members and sailors, or book a cabin on an OCSC Flotilla Leader’s yacht.
Since it’s founding, OCSC has been committed to environmental protection. We have always felt that especially since our business is built on enjoying nature, we are compelled to support organizations that work as guardians for all of us. Part of our approach has been to focus our efforts and appreciation on areas that we are privileged to visit on our bareboat flotillas.
To help this end your participation in our flotilla includes an additional contribution of $50 per person. The funds we collect are donated to an environmental protection initiative in the region we visit.
